‘Save The Cat’ is Pendulum at their most vulnerable – here’s what inspired it
Pendulum's latest track 'Save The Cat' is the first single off their upcoming album 'Inertia', their first in 15 years
Pendulum may be famous for their huge festival energy and genre-bending beats, but their new single ‘Save The Cat’ reveals a rawer, more personal side of the band.
Dropped alongside the announcement of their latest album, the song appears to be rooted in heartbreak and self-reflection, and offers a taste of the emotional journey to come.
Written during a tough period for member Rob Swire, ‘Save The Cat’ came after two breakups: one slow and drawn-out, the other sudden and without warning. With its heavy screamo sound, the latest track feels like a raw confrontation of those difficult feelings.
“It was written during a period of self-questioning and frustration,” Rob said. “Love felt like something I didn’t fully trust myself with anymore.”
He adds that breakups: “strip things down and show you who you are,” and ‘Save The Cat’ is the perfect example of that reckoning. “I’m just trying not to become the guy who needs to go through one just to make a record,” he added.
‘Save The Cat’ is the first taste of Inertia, Pendulum’s first full album in 15 years. The 16-track record is set to be their most personal to date, with Rob describing it as “the sound of Pendulum finding themselves again, and me figuring myself out to a certain extent.”
Their latest track, as well as the album, are clearly set to come from a place of growth and self-discovery but that’s not all.
Rob explains it was all about pushing boundaries sonically too, drawing inspiration from acts like The Prodigy who have evolved beyond their original sound to create something new and unique.
Produced by Rob and Owen Charles and recorded at their London studio, Inertia features collaborations from Bullet For My Valentine, Wargasm, AWOLNATION, Scarlxrd, and more.
‘Save The Cat’ is available to stream everywhere. Go give it a listen and let me know what you think.
