The meaning behind Mouth Culture's new single 'Ratbag'
Mouth Culture have just released live footage of new single ‘Ratbag’ performed at O2 Brixton Academy
Mouth Culture have just dropped a live performance video for their latest single, ‘Ratbag’, and it’s a fiery showcase of why the band is rapidly becoming one of the UK’s most exciting new rock acts.
Captured at O2 Brixton Academy during their support slot for You Me At Six in April, the video is a glimpse of the Leicester-based band’s relentless energy and unapologetic attitude.
Even as the opening act, Mouth Culture played with the same intensity of their headline shows. The crowd, already buzzing, shouted back the lyrics to a song that hadn’t even been officially released yet.
Mouth Culture have always open about their admiration for British rock, with Lower Than Atlantis and You Me At Six standing as major influences, and while the band’s recent EP, Whatever The Weather, which dropped in October reflected those key influences, ’Ratbag’ tells more about where the band is heading.
Produced by none other than Max Helyer of You Me At Six, alongside long-time collaborator Jamie Ward, the track is an anthem brimming with attitude, dubbed the "soundtrack to male recklessness."
It has what band have described as “grit” and “swagger”, so while channeling the energy of those early influences it also seems they are marking a shift towards a sound that’s more their own.
Talking about the track, the band said it’s, “a middle finger to those who think they’ll never be caught.” They go on to explain, “Beneath the bravado and chaos lies nothing but insecurity wrapped in arrogance—a boy masquerading as a man. If the shoe fits, wear it.”
Watching the Brixton performance only amplifies its raw energy, reminding fans exactly why Mouth Culture has quickly become one of the most talked-about new acts in the scene.
If the video leaves you wanting more, you’re in luck. The band has just announced five UK headline dates this October, with support from Beauty School.
