Weekly round-up: Turnstile, Deaf Havana and PUP
Musings about what's happening in and around the industry, including new releases
Questions of the week
Is Charli XCX right — are we heading for a Turnstile summer?
Turnstile are the band on everyone’s lips right now. The Baltimore hardcore heroes just dropped a dual video for SEEIN’ STARS and BIRDS, two new tracks from their upcoming album NEVER ENOUGH which is out 6th June. The visuals are just as hypnotic as the songs themselves, featuring collaborations with Blood Orange and Paramore.
There’s always been something magnetic about frontman Brendan Yates, but the energy in these new tracks (and that video) feels like Turnstile levelling up. The band are headlining Outbreak Festival on 13th June, followed by a Glastonbury slot, and if the anticipation around this album is anything to go by, Charli might be onto something. Band of the summer? Quite possibly.
What are the best family moments we’ve seen on stage?
Beyoncé kicked off her Cowboy Carter tour in style this week, with her daughter Blue Ivy, thriving in the spotlight once again. What are the best times artists have shared the stage with family? Here are a few unforgettable ones:
Shane Hawkins – Foo Fighters Tribute Show
Taylor Hawkins’ son Shane joined the Foo Fighters on drums for ‘My Hero’ during the Wembley tribute concert. It was a raw, emotional moment that had everyone in bits.
Nic Collins – Genesis Tour
Phil Collins’ son Nic took over drumming duties on Genesis’ final tour, it is probably one of the coolest full-circle moments.
Landon Barker – Travis Barker support
Landon’s stepped into the spotlight a few times now, and he’s frequently been joined his dad Travis Barker on stage.
But that’s not all, Miley Cyrus has duetted with her godmother Dolly Parton, Billie Joe Armstrong’s son Jakob has joined Green Day on stage, and Violet Grohl has teamed up with her dad, Dave Grohl, more than once.
Got a favourite ‘family on stage’ moment? Let me know in the comments.
What you might have missed:
Deaf Havana have announced their new single ‘Lawn Tennis’ will be released on the 8th May. The band have been pretty quiet since their album The Present is a Foreign Land’. On Instragram brothers James and Matty said they had hoped to release songs earlier but “they were not the next era of Deaf Havana as we KNEW it needed to be”.
Philadelphia alt-rock band Grayscale announced they will be touring in UK and Europe as part of their ‘Live in Colour’ tour in November. It will be the band’s first ever headline shows in Europe since their previous dates were cancelled due to the pandemic - I’m personally very excited for this one.
Just this morning Brighton-based punk band Kid Kapichi announced that Guitarist, Ben Beetham and Drummer, George Macdonald were leaving the band. It will be interesting to see what this means for the future of Kid Kapichi and what other projects come out of the works from Ben and George.
Linkin Park’s first album with new vocalist Emily Armstrong, ‘From Zero’, reached certified Gold in the UK last week. A deluxe edition of the album is to be released on the 16th May.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have seen Irish trio Kneecap making headlines after their Coachella set, where they expressed support for Palestine. I thought this article offered an interesting perspective on the situation.
On Friday, Robbie Williams opened his latest Exhibition ‘Radical Honesty’ at London’s Moco Museum. The exhibit features canvas works and sculptures centered around anxiety and emotional vulnerability inspired by his personal experience.
Recent releases
Having spent so much of my teenage life in the alt-rock world, it’s only in recent years that I’ve ventured into metalcore, and catching Loathe at RADAR Festival 2023 was a major turning point.
Off the back of their critically acclaimed album I Let It In and It Took Everything, their set was a highlight of the weekend. Now, the Liverpudlian band are back with their first new song in three years. After wiping their social media clean, they’ve returned with ‘Gifted Every Strength’ which so far has only been heard live by fans who caught them on the road with Spiritbox.
Green Day have dropped a new single, ‘Ballyhoo’, accompanied by a new lyric video.
The track arrives as part of the deluxe edition of last year’s album Saviors, and comes shortly after the band received their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, something they described on Instagram as a “dream come true.”
Toronto punk veterans PUP released their fifth album Who Will Look After the Dog? on Friday. Across 12 tracks, frontman Stefan Babcock reflects on his relationships but cautions, “I don’t exactly WANT people to relate to it – that would suck.”
True to form, it’s self-deprecating and vulnerable, as well as funny. It’s a reminder of how absurd and intrusive our darkest thoughts can be, but also how punk remains a cathartic way to scream them out.
Also out this week is In Ways, the debut album from Slung. Their single ‘Limassol’ dropped just ahead of the release, and the band have kicked off their tour on Friday to celebrate.
Slung’s sound draws from Deftones, Baroness, Wednesday, MJ Lenderman, Queens of the Stone Age – and even Chappell Roan and Fleetwood Mac but the heart of it all is Katie’s storytelling.
Keep an eye out for the next newsletter, but in the meantime, tell me what I’ve missed and who I should check out!
Shane Hawkins definitely the best!
